1.4 Marking a Stoma Site
Standard Statement
The specialist nurse marks the proposed stoma(s) site in accordance to Hospital policy.
The nurse specialist
- Ensures a private, confidential and safe environment.
- Assesses factors influencing the choice of stoma site including lifestyle, culture and abilities.
- Discusses the rationale for stoma siting and gains consent.
- Encourages the child and family to participate in the planning and marking of the potential stoma site.
- Marks the appropriate site(s) with an indelible pen by examination, observation and discussion with the patient.
Outcome Statement
Correct procedures undertaken to ensure optimum siting of stoma.
